D. Anthony Butterfield

Dr. D. Anthony Butterfield is Professor Emeritus at the UMass Amherst Isenberg School of Management. During his thirty-eight year tenure, he served as the Management Department chair, PhD program director, and interim Dean from 2007-2009. Butterfield was recently a director of international management conferences in Cape Town, Amsterdam and Rio de Janeiro, further raising the profile and visibility of UMass Amherst.

In the classroom, Butterfield taught organizational behavior theory, organizational research, and leadership. His research focused on leadership in general and specific leadership issues involving gender, the U.S. presidency, and leadership in other cultures. He also examined the promotion of women to top management positions and organizational phenomena in other cultures.

Butterfield has written numerous articles that have appeared in leading academic journals, including the Journal of Management, Personnel Psychology, and the Academy of Management Journals. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Yale University in 1961, and a master’s degree in 1963 and doctorate degree in 1968 from the University of Michigan.
