Reunion Weekend 2010

Meeting friends at Memorial Hall, strolling around the campus pond, listening to The Shades sing “Bye Bye Love”— it was as if the Class of 1960 was transported back in time during Reunion Weekend 2010.

More than 225 members from the Class of 1960 and Emeriti alumni attended Reunion Weekend on May 21-23. The Alumni Association along with the Reunion Committee planned an active schedule of events that included social gatherings, school and college visits, campus tours, and lectures.

During the Class Gift Dedication Ceremony, the Class of 1960 proudly presented their alma mater with the Million Heirs Scholarship Endowment totaling $1,345,663.00—the largest class gift ever to UMass Amherst. Planning for this impressive gift started 18 years ago and since that time, close to 200 members of the Class of 1960 have contributed to the scholarship campaign. An engraved plaque will commemorating this gift will be placed in Memorial Hall.

“We set a goal to leave a lasting legacy for the Class of 1960 by raising enough money to give meaningful scholarships for generations to come,” said Don Moriarty, chair of the Class of 1960 Gift Committee. “It wasn’t a hard sell because we’re all very close and we really appreciate what our UMass education has given us. Once we started reaching out to our classmates and telling them what we were trying to do, they were happy to give. We’re so proud to have surpassed our goal.”

Emeriti alumni from the Class of 1940, 1945, 1950, and 1955 were also on hand to celebrate special anniversaries. Myron Hager ’40 and Carolyn Monk Myrick ’40, were recognized as the oldest alumni in attendance celebrating the 70th anniversary of their graduation from college.

"It's a privilege to coordinate this special event each year," said Anna Symington ’76S, ’79, ‘83G, executive director of the UMass Amherst Alumni Association. "Our reunion alumni represent what the Alumni Association is all about: lifelong affinity and pride in your alma mater!"
